Saved for Heaven or for Christ?
We preach such a man-centered gospel these days that I don’t think we even realize all the ways that we’ve watered it down and changed it’s meaning. As I was driving home today I was struck by a thought: “The sinner who gets saved in order to get into Heaven is like a bride who wants to marry a man because she’ll get a nice house out it.”
The church is supposed to be the bride of Christ. It is He that our affections should be set upon, and it is Him that we will spend all of eternity with as we learn more and more of his infinite attributes. Heaven is just the setting in which our eternal honeymoon will take place, yet we treat it as if it is the main prize when we speak to people about the gospel.
Were you saved for Heaven or for Christ? Can you say that you love Him with your whole heart, so that everything else (both in this life and in the next) is just extra fluff that you could easily do without?
